embassy of denmark
Looking for new premises, the Embassy of Denmark decided to relocate to a floor within an office building in a lively central district of Athens. The Danish architectural firm Mejeriet was commissioned to create the design, bringing a distinctly Danish architectural identity to the project. They managed to alance functionality — by fitting all programmatic needs into an irregular floor plan — with character, achieved through the use of warm, welcoming materials.
As local partners, GFRA were entrusted with implementing the design. Their role was to ensure that the workspace not only met technical requirements but also shielded staff from the often extreme noise and heat of Athens — so that entering the office would feel more like stepping into Copenhagen.
The outdated premises were completely upgraded: new thermal insulation and windows were installed, acoustic partitions and ceilings introduced, and a state-of-the-art climate system put in place. At the same time, Mejeriet’s design emphasized warmth and tactility, with natural oak surfaces forming the central wooden core and ceiling, complemented by recognizable Danish elements such as carpets, furniture, and lighting.
“a distinctly Danish architectural identity to the project (…) with character, achieved through the use of warm, welcoming materials.”
“to ensure (…) that entering the office would feel more like stepping into Copenhagen.”
