For the European architecture competition entry for the renovation and extension of the Salzburg Pedagogical School, the competition brief asked for the Pedagogical School to accomodate a dense building program but at the same time for a solution that allowed the unique cityscape of Salzburg and its surrounding landscape not to be obstructed. Therefore instead of creating just an extension, the building is designed as a whole; a combination of the new and the existing building with a character that expresses both, as a unity, as part of the landscape and as part of the city as a whole.

The ground floor volume with public functions is ‘raised’ and becomes a landscape on its own, both in shape and function. The volumes above this level are concentrated close to the existing building, as to leave as much as possible free sightlines from the city towards the landscape and visa versa.

This landscape of the roof of the ground floor is experienced on top, as the roof is completely accessible and functions as an outside space for the school, as well as underneath where the roofshape is recognized in the ceiling of the large spaces of the transparent ground floor.

Στον Ευρωπαϊκό αρχιτεκτονικό διαγωνισμό για την ανακαίνιση και επέκταση της Παιδαγωγικής Σχολής του Salzburg ζητήθηκε ένα πυκνό κτιριολογικό πρόγραμμα και ταυτόχρονα μια λύση που αφήνει ανεμπόδιστο το μοναδικό τοπίο της πόλης του Salzburg και του περιβάλλοντός του. Έτσι αντί να δημιουργείται απλώς μια επέκταση, το κτίριο σχεδιάζεται ως ένα σύνολο, ένας συνδυασμός του νέου και του υφιστάμενου κτιρίου με χαρακτήρα που εκφράζει τα δυο ως ενότητα, ως τμήμα του τοπίου και της πόλης συνολικά.

Το επίπεδο του ισογείου που περιέχει κοινοχρηστους χώρους, ‘ανασηκώνεται’ και γίνεται το ίδιο τοπίο, μορφολογικά και λειτουργικά. Οι χώροι στους ανώτερους ορόφους συγκεντρώνονται κοντά στο υφιστάμενο κτίριο, αφήνοντας την μέγιστη δυνατή ελεύθερη οπτική επαφή από την πόλη προς το τοπίο και αντίστροφα.

Η στέγη-τοπίο του ισογείου είναι προβάσιμη από πάνω και χρησιμοποιείται ως εξωτερικός χώρος της σχολής, ενώ ταυτόχρονα διαβάζεται εσωτερικά στην οροφή των μεγάλων χώρων του διαφανούς ισογείου.
